ITU opens up huge online resource

Geneva, 10 September 2007 — ITU Standards produced by the Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) are now available online without charge. The announcement follows a highly successful trial conducted from January-October 2007, during which some two million ITU-T Recommendations were downloaded throughout the world.

The aim of the trial was to “increase the visibility and easy availability of the output of ITU-T”. Offering standards for free is a significant step for the standards community as well as the wider information and communication technologies (ICT) industry. Now, anyone with Internet access will be able to download any of over 3000 ITU-T Recommendations. These are used by equipment manufacturers, telecommunication network operators and service providers throughout the world to drive the information society. The move further demonstrates ITU’s commitment to bridging the digital divide by extending the results of its work to the global community.

ITU Goes to Bangkok in ‘08

Geneva, 19 September 2007 — ITU TELECOM ASIA 2008, the leading ICT Exhibition and Forum and major networking platform for players from across the Asia Pacific region, will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, 2-5 September 2008 at the IMPACT venue.

Asia spans some of the world’s most sophisticated telecommunications and ICT markets with the highest levels of ICT penetration. Economies such as the Republic of Korea, with a 29% broadband penetration in 2006 and Hong Kong, China with 25% are among the world’s broadband leaders. It also encompasses some of the world’s largest and fastest growing markets, such as China and India, where mobile subscribers alone account for some 494 million and 165 million respectively.

NEC Launches “Service Convergence Integrated Platform” on Global Market

Oct 8, 2007 – NEC Corporation today announced the worldwide release of a new converged multimedia and SIP voice solution, “Service Convergence Integrated Platform” (hereafter SCI Platform).  The SCI Platform enables VoIP and multimedia services, as well as offering a small start for operators such as fixed-line carriers or broadband internet operators for smooth transition to an IMS-based next generation network “NGN” in the future.

 

The SCI Platform realizing carrier-class quality, leverages blade-server architecture, bundles a SIP server, an operation & maintenance server and service enablers into a compact, yet highly-scalable all-in-one set.  Operators can utilize the new platform to rapidly develop and provide VoIP and multimedia services or value-added services such as Presence and IP messaging.
